We will meet over a coffee in the morning at 0900 and run through rock climbing equipment and how to use it safely. We go over the fundamentals of climbing knots as well as the essential techniques for effective belaying and climbing. After that, we put all of this knowledge into practice by honing our climbing technique, learning about safe falls, and learning how to climb safely on the rock.

Day one may include leading or 'shadow' leading depending on confidence and ability. There's no pressure.

You can expect to cover:

Recap tying in and belaying.
Discuss modern gear such autolocking belay devices, fixed gear and harnesses.
Demonstrate and practice the use of this gear on the rock.
Practice cleaning sport routes
Set a framework for safe and solid belays (ABC and IDEAS acronyms)
We meet again at 0900 and immediately move outside to begin the climbing. Perhaps attempting your first sport lead climbs under our careful supervision, if you feel ready! You can step up the challenge at your own speed as your competence and confidence grow. We also go over abseiling, avoiding typical issues, withdrawing from routes and some basic rescue techniques.
