The Rock Skills courses are a pathway towards independent outdoor rock climbing, accredited by the Mountain Training organisation and designed for people to start as complete beginners, or join a course at what ever level they are at.

About the trip

The Rock Skills Learn to Lead Trad Climbs course will provide you with the skills you need to participate in traditionally (trad) protected climbing. This course is also ideal if you are looking to improve your confidence or refresh your personal trad leading skills with the aim of helping you to become an independent climber.

With small course numbers, you will be given maximum support and guidance through placing gear on lead and making safe decisions on outdoor crags. We will cover a wide variety of skills, knowledge and techniques throughout the two days, giving you excellent ground work for moving on to independent rock climbing. Expert tuition will hugely accelerate your skills and confidence, enabling you to return to climbing with others safely and competently.

ESSENTIAL Have belayed on at least 20 occasions; AND Have seconded a minimum of 20 rock climbs at Very Difficult (VDiff) or above; OR Have led 20 sport climbs (indoors or outdoors).

DESIRABLE Completion of Rock Skills Intermediate and/or Rock Skills Learn to Lead Sport.

Course meeting point: Keswick
Course timings: 9am – 5pm
Course numbers: maximum of two participants
Prerequisites: see the above climbing experience desired. You will also need to register with Mountain Training (£20 for adults and free for under 18s) before attending these courses, where you will be given an online logbook, new climbers information, and will be able to register for any future skills courses or instructing awards.

Travel logistics: I encourage people to car share or use public transport if possible, in order to make the course accessible and minimise our environmental impact. We will share cars to a local crag, there are good train links to Penrith, and buses in to Keswick. Please inform me when booking if you are planning on using public transport.

Minimum age: 14
(Note: under 18s must be accompanied by an adult)

My courses are always catered to the clients, relaxed, fun and involve as much climbing and learning as possible! Bespoke dates are available on request.

The course content and delivery will be adapted to suit the participants, weather and venues. We will meet on the first day for introductions and a run through the course. We will aim to spend as much time learning outside as possible, but occasionally in adverse weather we might spend a little time at an indoor wall if that is a better location to practise rope work for the conditions.

Listed below are the topics we aim to cover:

- Background and Planning. Selecting suitable venues and routes, how to use guidebooks and mobile devices to find crags and routes, crag etiquette, the importance of the climbing partnership and the work of the mountaineering councils.

- Climbing Skills. Safe and assured movement when leading climbs and optimising natural rests for placing gear.

- Equipment. Ropes and technical equipment for lead climbing, contents of a lead rack and how to carry it, selection and function of gear.

- Technical Skills. Selection and placement of suitable gear to protect leader and second, choosing anchors, effective ropework, attaching to multiple anchors, belaying, holding leader and second falls in a controlled environment.

- Environmental Knowledge. The impact of climbers at the crag, ethics and environmental considerations for climbers.

- Hazards and Emergency Procedures. Identifying hazards, decision making and managing risk, understanding common injuries, what to do in the event of an incident, managing common problems, how to get help and learning how Mountain Rescue works.
