About the trip

Season: From mid June to end of September.
Open dates: 11-13 September 2020
More dates available on request.

The wilderness of Vålådalen Nature Reserve invites you to an epic adventure. Pure air, crystal clear lakes and plenty of wildlife as well as signs of the Sami people and traces from the ice age are some of the characteristics of this area. The first night will be spent in a shared double room and the second night we will be up in the mountains by the large U-shaped valley called Lunndörrspasset. Here we will stay in a cozy but rustic mountain cabin with no electricity and running water. The long days of summer with warm weather and the shorter but more colourful autumn days are well worth a visit.

Travel to and from the starting location:
I recommend flying to Arlanda (Stockholm), then taking the night train to Åre or Undersåker. Here, I will pick you up or arrange for the transportation. On all the tours I will help you get the right and best national transportation to make sure you have a friction free process. Questions about getting to the starting location? Let me know and I will sort it out for you.

To book the train from Arlanda to Åre or Undersåker, please visit the governmental rail road company SJ: www.sj.se
(If SJ says that the ticket is not available to purchase, please ask me and I will call them to check as they do not always release all tickets in advance)

You can also fly to Trondheim, Norway and take the train east to Åre or Undersåker.

By car:
The starting location is approximately 2 hours east of Trondheim (Norway) or 1½ hours west of Östersund (Sweden) by car.

Itinerary

DAY 1
The first day will be spent hiking in the nearby area of Vålådalen in mostly sheltered terrain. We will pass by an area that is very famous and photogenic called Blanktjärn (meaning shiny lake). Approximately 14 km (8.7 miles) with a few breaks for lunch and some Swedish fika (coffee and buns). I will of course tell you more about the area as we travel through it. In the evening we will discuss the plan for the next two days before heading off for a shared dinner at a local restaurant.
DAY 2
Day 2 starts off by hiking through open forests and across meadows with snowcapped mountains in the background. Depending on the season, the colours and the light will shift as we make our way upwards toward the treeline. At the foot of Lunndörrspasset we may have time to venture into it where I will point out some Sami cultural sites and tell you more about the mining ventures that took place here long ago. The evening will be spent preparing dinner together in the candle light and if we are lucky, the northern lights can be spotted through the window. A visit to the sauna and dip into the lake is recommended and a unique experience before a night of well deserved sleep.
DAY 3
After a healthy breakfast we pack our bags and head off into the east to face the sun. Below the mountains of Anaris is an amazing area where traces of the ice ages are scattered across the landscape. This is a good idea why to bring a certified guide when hiking in the Vålådalen Nature Reserve. Places like Ice Lake Valley and 'The Pyramids' are passed by before we head down into the wild forest on our way back to where we started. Expect an early start and a long day outdoors but the path is relatively easy to hike and it is mostly downhill.
